On 5 February 2025, ELEMENTS-spokesperson Luciano Rezzolla will receive the PRACE HPC Excellence Award 2024, which recognises groundbreaking research and scientific advances through the use of high-performance computing (HPC). Rezzolla and his team were involved in the first images of supermassive black holes and made their interpretation possible with the help of numerical simulations and the construction of a theoretical framework that is able to interpret them and extract physical information. The fascinating images were taken as part of the international collaboration on the Event Horizon Telescope.

The Frankfurter Kunstverein’s exhibition “The Presence of Absence” delves into the concepts of change and transience, and how these are represented in art. A unique aspect of the exhibition is the dialogue between contemporary art and scientific discoveries, particularly in geology and astrophysics. The show features work by ELEMENTS-spokesperson Luciano Rezzolla, whose groundbreaking research on Black Holes is prominently highlighted.

Rezzolla’s work focuses on the formation and behavior of black holes, where matter becomes infinitely condensed, creating a paradox of presence and absence. The exhibition invites visitors to ponder fundamental questions about the origins of the universe, the nature of matter, and what it means to recognize black holes at the center of our galaxy. By showcasing his scientific insights alongside artistic interpretations, the exhibition creates a compelling dialogue between the physical and metaphysical.

The exhibition is on display until March 2025. On 10 November 2024, you can join Luciano Rezzolla and Franziska Nori, Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, on a tour of the exhibition (in English).

The post Science meets Art in Frankfurt appeared first on ELEMENTS.

The electron accelerator S-DALINAC at the Institute for Nuclear Physics, in use since 1964, rarely opens to the public. However, on October 1st, guests from science and politics gathered to celebrate its milestone anniversary.

Professor Matthias Oechsner, Vice President for Research at TU Darmstadt, highlighted the accelerator’s significance for both the university and international nuclear physics. Research Minister Timon Gremmels praised its long-term contribution to technological innovations in fields like medicine and the automotive industry.

After the ceremony, a public open house allowed visitors to explore the accelerator’s history and technology. The event featured guided tours, exhibits of historical photos and original parts, and opportunities to speak directly with scientists. The interactive sessions, especially popular with younger visitors, sparked interest in physics.

On 21 June 2024, Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt opened its doors again to the public by celebrating this year’s Night of Science. Taking place all night long from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., the event featured over almost 100 science talks from neuroscience to physics, guided lab tours, and booths for interactive experiences.

Our Early Career Researchers Reinhold Kaiser and Jan Michel were happy to showcase the human-sized Neutron Star model and answer many curious questions about astrophysics.

ELEMENTS principal investigator Camilla Juul Hansen and spokesperson Luciano Rezzolla from Goethe University explained the formation of “Silver and Gold in the Universe“ and “The Irresistible Attraction of Gravity” in their respective talks.

Taking place since 2006, the student-organized event aims to make science accessible and understandable for the public. This year’s Night Of Science leading figure and scientific role model was Lise Meitner, the first female physics professor in Germany, who is known for her substantial contributions to the fields of radioactivity and nuclear fission.

The post ELEMENTS joins Night of Science once again appeared first on ELEMENTS.
